Why become a member with us?

a) AGLIN represents the interests and concerns of member libraries and information services in wider government and library industry forums;

 

b) AGLIN develops and implements co-operative schemes and resource sharing activities among Australian Government libraries and information services e.g. an opt-in reciprocal free of charge Inter-Library-Loan scheme. AGLIN also assisted with establishing the Defence Standing Offers for Publications and Contract Library Personnel – all Australian Government departments and agencies reporting under the FMA or CAC Acts are eligible to use the Standing Offers.

 

c) AGLIN serves as a forum to consider and reach consensus on issues and policies which affect Australian Government libraries and information services;

 

d) AGLIN promotes

  • improved access to information by Australian Government agencies and their staff (including the AGLIN e-list),
  • research and development in the application of new technologies and information systems relevant to Australian Government libraries and information services, and
  • improvements in the management of Australian Government libraries and information services.

e) AGLIN is developing capacity for the provision of expert advisory services to its members and other organisations as appropriate in such areas as:

  • cost effective procurement
  • guidelines and standards e.g. the “Australian Government Libraries Information Network Core Principles for Provision of Library and Information Services”
  • performance measurement, staff professional development and training, copyright and marketing.

f)  AGLIN promotes professional development and career opportunities for information professionals in the government sector. AGLIN provides a discounted rate for member libraries' staff to attend training organised by AGLIN and the biannual AGLIN Professional Development Forum. AGLIN partners with ALIA in running Information Sharing Forums on regular basis. Moreover, AGLIN provides scholarship opportunities for staff from member libraries to attend events such as the Aurora Leadership Institute and the New Librarian's Symposium.  

 

g) AGLIN fosters and facilitates the dissemination of Australian Government publications to the wider community by:

  • ensuring appropriate bibliographical control is achieved for all publications of Australian Government agencies,
  • supporting the maintenance of library deposit arrangement for all Australian Government agency publications, and
  • promoting the use of appropriate commercial distribution arrangements.
